The Mystery Bag Challenge

This low-prep activity encourages creative thinking, storytelling, and problem-solving—all using items you already have at home.

What You’ll Need:

  • A paper bag, tote, or box

  • 3–5 random household objects (think: a spoon, a sock, a small toy, a button, a pinecone—anything safe and clean!)

  • Paper and something to write or draw with (optional)

How It Works:

  1. Fill the bag with a few surprise items.

  2. Have your child pull out all the objects and either:

    • Create a story that includes all of them (great for language skills and creativity),

    • Build or invent something using the objects (flex that engineering brain!), or

    • Sort and categorize the items by shape, size, use, or color (early math and critical thinking).

You can switch up the challenge depending on your child’s age or interests. Add drawing or writing components for older kids—or have younger ones act out their story like a play or puppet show!
